Even in Taiwan, a society often praised for its openness and gender diversity, understanding of transgender identities is still in its early stages. From sports to legal debates, public discourse often remains confined within the binary gender framework—even among the more progressive voices.
" #The Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association" has been advocating for transgender issues for over two decades.
From the participation of early transgender volunteers, forming a dedicated team, and later establishing an official Transgender Group, the Hotline has consistently supported the community through gatherings, lectures, workshops, family consultations, support groups, and even hosting Taiwan’s first Transgender Pride Parade in 2019.
This book is the result of years of dedication from the Transgender Group at the Hotline. It presents 21 heartfelt stories told through personal narratives and interviews—offering insight into the real lives of transgender individuals. These stories reflect inner psychological changes, journeys of self-reflection, and the challenges of navigating social norms, legal systems, access to medical care, relationships, and career paths.
Spanning different ages and eras, the stories document the diverse life experiences of trans individuals across various social and professional backgrounds.
A transmasculine teacher is constantly questioned by students about their gender identity; a gender nonconforming child is scolded by a teacher for not “acting normal”; a retiree discovers their gender identity late in life but cannot undergo surgery due to health risks; another person has experienced relationships as both a man and a woman, with people of all genders; someone else embraces their male body while also enjoying the expression of a feminine appearance.
These stories explore a wide spectrum of transgender experiences and identities, highlighting the complexity and resilience involved in breaking gender norms.
